Estonia extends Defence Force support in Poland

1. February 2022 - 15:17

On request from Poland, the Minister of Defence decided to extend the support of the Estonian Defence Force in Poland until the end of April. The unit from Estonia will continue to support Poland in countering the hybrid attack from Belarus through border barrier construction and media support.

The second rotation of the unit is currently in Poland and their work has been successful at every level.

“Poland is a very important regional Ally for Estonia. Our cooperation both bilaterally and within the framework of various organisations is increasingly close. Our Defence Force and Defence League members have carried out their tasks very well, as is also demonstrated by the fact that they were asked to stay in Poland longer,” commented minister Kalle Laanet. “In today’s complicated security situation, the importance of mutual solidarity, readiness for rapid responding and practical help is very clearly evident,” added the defence minister.

The exact length of time that the additional rotations will spend in Poland will depend on the volume of the tasks, which will be agreed on an operative level. The size and formation of the unit will be similar to the first two rotations. The main tasks of the Estonian unit will continue to be the construction and repair of the temporary border barrier, and the Estonian camera crew will continue to provide support through producing audiovisual material.
