Today, the Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet went to Saaremaa to visit two local defence industry companies and the district of Estonian Defence League.
The Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet met with the manager of Ionix Systems Margus Tang with whom they toured in the company’s production building that is dedicated to the defence industry. Ionix Systems is a manufacturer of precision electrical and electronic equipment and components, and manufactures wiring systems for both the aerospace and defence industries.
Afterwards, the minister visited the Saaremaa shipbuilding company Baltic Workboats, where a member of the company's management Board Jüri Taal gave an overview of their ongoing projects and plans for the coming years.
They took a tour, during which a new ship was tested, and discussed co-operation and Baltic Workboats' preparations for the development of new modular unmanned ships, which are needed at the end of the decade in the entire Baltic market and the wider region.
“I am glad that Saaremaa is a pioneering developer of the Estonian defence industry,” said Laanet. In 2020, Baltic Workboats provided force protection vessels for the Estonian Defence Forces.
The visit continued with a reception by the Commander of the Saaremaa Defence League district Lieutenant Colonel Gunnar Havi. Havi provided the Minister of Defence Laanet an overview of the activities of the district.
The visit ended with a visit to the Saaremaa deepwater port.
