Tuesday, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik had a video call with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Tod D. Wolters about NATO’s defence and deterrence posture.
Minister Luik emphasised that the security situation in our region has not improved, an example of which is the adoption of a new missile system by Russia that poses a threat to the entire Alliance.
Luik thanked General Wolters for the progress that has been made in strengthening NATO’s defence and deterrence posture, and both sides reaffirmed that the Allies would move forward with the agreed upon actions.
The Minister of Defence also thanked General Wolters for the current presence of the United States in Estonia and our region. ‘The presence of US B-1 and B-52 aircraft and MQ-9 Reaper Unmanned ´Aerial Vehicles in Estonia sends a clear signal of Allied unity,’ Luik said.
Luik added that the opportunity to involve those aircraft in various cooperation exercises is very valuable to Estonian Defence Forces. General Wolters noted that the Allied presence in Estonia is supported here by good infrastructure and appropriate support from the Host Nation.
At the meeting, General Wolters and Minister Luik spoke about the important role played by NATO in supporting member states during the COVID-19 crisis.
