NATO Allied battlegroup in Estonia

Following the Russian Federation's annexation of Crimea, Ukraine, in 2014, and the subsequent conflict in eastern Ukraine, NATO Allied heads of state and government decided at the 2016 Warsaw Summit, in response to the changed security environment, to deploy permanent battlegroups on the Alliance’s eastern flank in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.

In spring 2017, a NATO Allied battlegroup of more than 1,000 troops arrived in Estonia and were stationed in Tapa. The framework nation of the battlegroup is the United Kingdom, whose units are equipped with tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and self-propelled artillery. In addition to the United Kingdom, France contributes a company-sized unit to the battlegroup. The Allied battlegroup is integrated into the Estonian Defence Forces’ 1st Infantry Brigade.

The purpose of the NATO battlegroup deployed in Estonia is to demonstrate Allied solidarity, strengthen NATO’s collective defence capability in Estonia, and thereby deter the Russian Federation from pursuing hostile objectives. At the same time, the Allied forces within the NATO battlegroup are prepared, if necessary, to stand alongside Estonian Defence Forces personnel in resisting a military attack against Estonia by the Russian Federation.

In previous years, Belgium, Iceland, and Denmark have also contributed to the NATO battlegroup stationed in Tapa.

Brigade assigned to Estonia’s defence

At the 2022 Madrid Summit, it was decided to assign additional brigade-sized units to defend NATO’s eastern flank states. In 2022, the United Kingdom pledged to act as the framework nation for a reinforcement brigade designated for Estonia and to assign a unit for Estonia’s defence that is permanently based in the United Kingdom, to be deployed to Estonia in the event of a crisis or conflict, as well as regularly during exercises.

Since the summer of 2025, the United Kingdom’s 4th Brigade has been held at high readiness in the United Kingdom to reinforce Estonia.
