Estonia’s participation in international military operations

Participation in international military operations demonstrates Estonia’s commitment to sharing the burden of maintaining peace and stability worldwide and supports the achievement of Estonia’s security policy objectives. Estonia has been involved in such operations since 1995.

Engagement in these operations strengthens cooperation with our strategic partners, primarily the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, who actively contribute to NATO’s deterrence and defence posture, enhancing security in the Baltic region through the presence of their forces. For Estonia, it is important to contribute in solidarity to addressing security challenges in Southern Europe and to combating threats that affect Europe, such as terrorism, at their source.

Participation in international military operations also increases the professionalism of Estonian Defence Forces personnel and the interoperability of our units with allies and partners. This improves the overall development of the Defence Forces, strengthens Estonia’s defence capability, and enhances deterrence.
