Estonia’s national defence is comprehensive.Defending the country is not the responsibility of the Defence Forces alone – it is a shared responsibility of the entire nation.
A strong defence is built on the readiness, resilience, and commitment of society. When every citizen understands their role and is prepared to contribute, Estonia becomes stronger.
Together, we build a country that is ready to defend its people, protect its values, and safeguard its freedom.
The mission of the Ministry of Defence is to prevent attacks directed at Estonia and ensure that Estonia can protect itself from external threats.
To this end, the Ministry of Defence makes proposals for shaping Estonia’s defence policy and oversees the organisation of national defence and defence-related cooperation.
Estonia’s security is built on strong international cooperation. In today’s security environment, no country can ensure its defence alone. Therefore, alliances and international partnerships are one of the fundamental pillars of Estonia’s national defence.
Estonia works closely with Allies and partners to strengthen collective defence, develop military capabilities, and increase readiness to respond jointly to security threats. This cooperation includes joint exercises, operations, capability development, defence industry collaboration, and the exchange of experience and expertise.
