Minister of Defence of Estonia, Kalle Laanet has directed that 130 km of barbed wire to be installed along the border to prepare for a possible hybrid attack against Estonia. ‘The Defence Forces are ready to contribute to the installation of a barbed wire barrier with the Engineer Battalion, if necessary,’ said Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet.
‘Belarus continues to deliberately escalate the hybrid attack on the Polish-Lithuanian border, which is why we are taking the necessary measures to protect the Estonian state border. In addition to the installation of barbed wire, we are prepared to immediately contribute to the protection of the border with the Police and Border Guard Board as well as members of the Defence League district, with the Police and Border Guard and the Defence League having already begun negotiations in this regard,’ added Minister Laanet.
‘We are also in contact with our Allies on a daily basis, in order to coordinate activities in the event that the situation were to escalate,’ said Minister of Defence Laanet, adding that since the beginning of the hybrid attack we have been monitoring the situation with great care and have contributed to resolving the situation by sending barrier wire, unmanned aircraft crews and a Military Police unit to Lithuania.
