Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet met with French Defence Minister Florence Parly, in Paris. The main topics of the meeting were the security situation in Mali and the continuing concentration of Russian forces near the Ukrainian border. The defence ministers also discussed the European Union’s strategic compass and new co-operation initiatives between the two countries.

The defence ministers acknowledged that the situation at Ukraine’s borders is worrying and threatens European security. Possible NATO deterrence measures on the eastern wing of the alliance were discussed, including bilateral co-operation between Estonia and France.

‘Western steps to discourage aggressive Russian behaviour cannot be limited to telephone calls, but must include specific actions,’ said Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet.

It was agreed that Russia’s behaviour poses a challenge, in both Europe and Africa. The situation in Mali was discussed, where Estonian troops are contributing within the framework of a coalition led by France. Speaking about the situation in Mali, it was stated that the goal of the Russian Federation is to increase its influence in the region and to destroy European unity. It was agreed that close communication and coordination on both topics would continue.

Estonia is contributing to three operations in Mali – the French-led Operation Barkhane and its special operations Task Force Takuba, the UN mission MINUSMA, and the European Union training mission EUTM Mali.
